How to Make Stainless Steel Cookware Non-Stick?

Stainless steel cookware is a durable, high-quality cookware designed to stand the test of time. Made from 18/10 stainless steel, stainless steel cookware is great at conducting heat and ensuring your food cooks evenly. It's great for cooking all types of food such as acidic food, meat, vegetables, eggs and bacon.

One of the most common questions we get at Stevens is how do you make stainless steel cookware non-stick? It's a lot of trial and error but when you learn how, you'll be surprised that it took you this long to learn.

The Drop Test

The drop test is what we like to call this method. It simply involves you gently warming your pan and testing its hotness with a drop of water. If you know the temperature of your pan then you can determine when the best time to add oil is so it creates a non-stick layer.

1. Place a cold frypan on an element on a medium heat. The key to getting a non-stick pan is to not heat it on a high heat. A medium to low heat is sufficient as stainless steel cookware is great at retaining heat.

2. Heat the frypan for about 5 minutes until you can feel it is warm if you hover your hand over it.

3. Test the pan is hot enough. This is the most crucial step! Pour a few drops of tap water into the heated pan.

If the drops bubble and fade away = the pan is not hot enough.

If the drops stay as a drop and move around the pan = the pan is hot enough.

4. Now that the pan is hot enough, add a tablespoon of olive oil and cook as normal. Your pan should be non-stick.

Every time you go to cook with stainless steel, you will have to complete the steps above if you want a non-stick pan but this method is worth it. Soon you'll be cooking fried eggs without them sticking to the pan!
